Gurbani on Moorti Pooja/Idol Worship
Beloved Hindu brother! In your traditions, idol worship is a priority to you but the Sikh religion condemns it:

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji explain why there was enmity between him and the hindu hill kings:
ਮਨਮ ਕੁਸ਼ਤਨਮ ਕੋਹੀਯਾਂ ਬੁਤ ਪਰਸਤ ॥
Manam Kushth-anam Koheeyaa[n] Buth Prasth
I have killed those idol worshipping hill kings...
Ki O Buth Parastha[n]dhoo Man Buth Shikasth
As they are idol worshippers and I break idols...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj in Zafarnaamah, 1st Hikayath)
-
In Dhab-i-sthaan-i-Mazaahab, it says the following:
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੰਥੀ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਹੈਨ, ਓਹ ਬੁੱਤ ਔਰ ਬੁੱਤਖਾਨਿਆਂ ਪਰ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਖਦੇ ।‘
The Nanak-Panthi’s - the Guru’s Sikhs - they don’t have faith in idols nor idol-houses/mandhir’s.
A prime historical example of sikhs not being idol worship are: out of all 10 Guru Sahib’s, there is no example of Guru Sahib making any mandhir’s where idols have been installed.
-
Hindu: You have proved that Sikhs don’t do idol worship using Gurbani examples but isn’t worship of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, also idol worship? You consider Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the physical form of the Guru and keep Karaah Prashaad in a bowl which is then kept aside for it to be enjoyed by Guru Sahib.
-
Sikh: Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji are given respect for being the Commands from Akaal Purakh. Through which truth-filled spiritual & worldly teachings can be found. We don’t worship in the ways that people worship idols. The bowl of Karraah Prashad is left for the Granthi Singh and not for Guru Sahib to enjoy.
[TN: In Bhai Nand Lal Ji’s Question and Answer/Prashan-Uthar with Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, they asked Guru Maharaj about how to behold/have Darshan of Them. Guru Maharaj replied: Nirgun, Sargun, and GurShabad. Nirgun = Formless/Attributeless of Vaheguru Ji, Sargun - Punj Pyaare/GurSikh taking on a physical form, GurShabad = GurBani].
-
Just like royal declarations are given some reverence in this world: i.e. the head is bowed down... In the same way, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji are given honour and respect. This is because Gurbani is the Declaration by the Highest Father - the King of Kings - Vaheguru Ji. If some beloved brother or sister starts doing puja like a pujari/priest without understanding/implementing Gurbani then this mistake is not seen to be part of Sikh traditions [TN: This is translated to the highest level of accuracy but does not reflect the translator’s opinion. There are many Sikhs who truly do see Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the physical form of Guru Sahib. Although it would be ideal for them to reflect and understand the meanings of Gurbani, we still encourage them to give respect and worship regardless. There is a Sakhi from the times of Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji. A Sikh asks whether there is still benefit of reading Gurbani even if one doesn’t understand it and Guru Maharaj describe a pot filled with butter. When the pot is broken [ie when one doesn’t understand Gurbani] then the butter still clings [just like the Gurbani still is attached to the mind. Even the physical worship towards Gurbani yields high respect that leads to every word to be held to a high esteem. I won’t go into further depth but Gurbani speaks to us and through reading will lead to our liberation. So why shouldn’t we give the highest level of respect?]
-
Hindu: In Guru Granth Sahib Ji, it says that Bhagat Dhanna Ji met Parameshwar through the stone and a famous example is Bhagat Naamdev Ji’s idol worship that led him to attaining Eeshwar. Bhai Gurdaas Ji write about Bhagat Dhanna Ji and Bhagat Naamdev Ji in their Vaaran which shows the well-known nature of idol worship:
-
Sikh: From Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj:
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਜਾਟਰੋ ਉਠਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
Ih Bidhh[i] Sun[i] Kai Jaataro Utt[i] Bhagathee Laagaa
Listening in this way, the Jatt/Farmer (Bhagat Dhanna Ji) started to do Bhagti (Devotional Worship)
Milae Prathakh[i] Gusaaee Dhha[n]naa Vad-Bhaagaa
Meeting Vaheguru Ji in person, Bhagat Dhanna Ji had great fate/karma...(Dhan Bhagat Dhanna Ji in Raag Aasaa, Ang 488)
-
Besides this, there are no other writings that give weight to Bhagat Dhanna Ji’s life story and no reference to worshipping stones. In Bhagat Maal (which is a Hindu writer’s writing), you will definitely find stories about idol worship which Bhai Gurdaas Ji have briefly described for Sikhs to gain knowledge about. But, this specific story has not been written by Sikhs nor are they responsible for translating these stories.
-
There is no doubt that Bhagat Naamdev Ji first worshiped an idol but when he received spiritual teaching from a complete Guru then he saw Param-aatma as omnipresent/all-pervading then let go of the practice of idol worship. As Bhagat Ji says himself:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਸਹਸਾ ਜਾਈ॥
Sathigur[u] Milai Tha Sahsaa Jaaee
Meeting Guru Sahib will cause one to lose all doubts...
Kis[u] Ho[u] Poojo[u] Dhoojaa nadhar[i] na Aaee
Who should I worship when I don’t see anyone besides Vaheguru Ji
Aekai Paathhar Keejai Bhaao[u]
Keeping love for one stone...
Dhoojai Paathhar Dhhareeai Paao[u]
[but] other stones are trampled by the feet...
Jae Oh[u] Dhae-o[u] Tha Oh[u] Bhee Dhaevaa
If one [stone] is divine then the others are divine too
Kah[i] naam-dhae-o[u] Ham Har[i] Kee Saevaa
Bhagat Naamdev Ji say: I serve Vaheguru Ji...
(in Raag Goojaree, Ang 525)
-
Jahaa Jaaeeai Thah Jal Pakhaan
Wherever I go, there is water and stones.
Thoo Poor[i] Rahi-O Hai Sabh Samaan...
You - Vaheguru Ji - are pervading completely equally within everything...
Sathigur Mai Balihaaree Thor
Guru Sahib I am a Sacrifice to You
Jin[i] Sakal Bikal Bhram Kaatae Mor...
the One who cut off all weaknesses and delusions of mine
(Dhan Bhagat Raama-ana[n]dh in Raag Basanth, Ang 1195)
-
If there is any wise/rational man who stands against the truth then they should at least accept the following: Before Guru Angad Dev Ji (as Bhai Lehna Ji) came to the Sanctuary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, they used to worship a devi/female deity and Sri Guru Raam-Daas Sahib Ji used to worship the Ganga river before coming into the Sanctuary of Guru Amar-Daas Sahib Ji. This proves that it is not worth worshipping Durga and Ganga in Sikhi. If someone does it then they are acting blindly.
-
So my beloved Hindu brother Ji! Understand the principles behind Bhagat Naamdev Ji among other Bhagat’s stories.
-
