Gurbani on Fasting
In [Hindu] traditions, there is a practice of fasting during Ekadashi, Janam Ashtami among other times. However, the Sikh religion says the following about these actions:
A[n] na Khaah[i] Dhaehee Dhukh[u] Dheejai;
Bin[u] Gur Giaan Thripath[i] nahee Theejai
If you do not eat food then you give pain to your body;
Without Guru’s Wisdom, one does not attain fulfillment...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Raag Raamkalee, Ang 905)
-
Man[i] Sa[n]thokh[u] Sarab Jeea Dha-iaa; In Bidhh[i] Barath[u] Sa[n]pooran[u] Bha-iaa
Having contentment in the mind and having compassion for all beings;In this way the ‘fast’ is complete...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji in Thhithee, Raag Gourree, Ang 299)
-

Dhasmee Dhasae Dhuaar Jae Ttaakai Aekaadasee Aek[u] Kar[i] JaaNai
For the 10th day of the month, restrain the 10 doors then on the 11th day - you will know the One (Ekadashi/11th day many Vaishnav’s fast)
