Ending of Chaupai Sahib

ਜੋ ਕਲਿ ਕੌ ਇਕ ਬਾਰ ਧਿਐਹੈ ॥ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਲ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨਹਿ ਐਹੈ ॥
Jo Kal[i] Kau Ik Baar Dhi-ai-hai; Thaa Kae Kaal nikat[i] nah[i] ai-hai
That being who remembers that (Kal[i] =) Beautiful Vaheguru Ji,
Kaal (Death) does not come near them...

ਰਛਾ ਹੋਇ ਤਾਹਿ ਸਭ ਕਾਲਾ ॥ ਦੁਸਟ ਅਰਿਸਟ ਟਰੈਂ ਤਤਕਾਲਾ ॥੩੯੮॥
Rachhaa Ho-i Thaah[i] Sabh Kaalaa; Dhusat Arist Tarai[n] Thath-kaalaa
That being will be protected at all times and Those obstacle creating cruel ones go far away [TN: ie removed]

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਨਿਹਰਿਹੋ ॥ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਤਾਪ ਤਨਕ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿਹੋ ॥
Kripaa Dhrist[i] Than Jaah[i] nihariho; Thaa Kae Thaap Thanak Mah[i] Hariho
Oh Vaheguru Ji! Whoever You look at with The Blessed Sight,
All of Their Suffering is (Hariho=) destroyed (Thanak=) in a small time frame...

ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਘਰ ਮੋ ਸਭ ਹੋਈ ॥ ਦੁਸਟ ਛਾਹ ਛ੍ਵੈ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੩੯੯॥
Ridhh[i] Sidhh[i] Ghar Mo Sabh Hoee; Dhust Chhaah Chhvai Sakai na Koee
All Ridhhiyan Sidhhiyan (Supernatural powers) from Vaheguru Ji’s House become present and no enemy can even touch their shadow...

ਏਕ ਬਾਰ ਜਿਨ ਤੁਮੈ ਸੰਭਾਰਾ ॥ ਕਾਲ ਫਾਸ ਤੇ ਤਾਹਿ ਉਬਾਰਾ ॥
Aek Baar Jin Thumai Sa[n]bhaaraa; Kaal Phaas Thae Thaah[i] Ubaaraa
Oh Akaal Purakh Ji! Whoever has (Sanbhaaraa =) maintained/carried [in the mind] - meaning remembered You, they are (Ubaaraa =) saved by You from the noose of death... 

ਜਿਨ ਨਰ ਨਾਮ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ਕਹਾ ॥ ਦਾਰਿਦ ਦੁਸਟ ਦੋਖ ਤੇ ਰਹਾ ॥੪੦੦॥
Jin nar naam Thihaaro Kahaa; Dhaaridh Dhust Dhokh Thae Rahaa
That being who has recited Your Name from their tongue,
they are saved from (Dhaaridh=) poverty, cruelty, enemies,
and (Dokh=) sins/bad actions...

ਖੜਗ ਕੇਤੁ ਮੈ ਸਰਨਿ ਤਿਹਾਰੀ ॥ ਆਪੁ ਹਾਥ ਦੈ ਲੇਹੁ ਉਬਾਰੀ ॥
Kharrag-Kaeth[u] Mai Saran[i] Thihaaree; Aap[u] Haathh Dhai Laeh[u] Ubaaree
Oh (Kharrag Kaeth=) Vaheguru Ji who have a Sword as part of Their Battle Standards! I have come to Your Sanctuary, Please bless this slave with Your Blessing Hand and save me.

ਸਰਬ ਠੌਰ ਮੋ ਹੋਹੁ ਸਹਾਈ ॥ ਦੁਸਟ ਦੋਖ ਤੇ ਲੇਹੁ ਬਚਾਈ ॥੪੦੧॥
Sarab Ttaur Mo Hoh[u] Sahaaee; Dhust Dhokh Thae Laeh[u] Bachaaee
Oh Vaheguru Ji! You are my Helper in all places. Please save me from the outwardly cruel ones and the internal (Dhokh=) sins/bad actions...

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੀ ਹਮ ਪਰ ਜਗਮਾਤਾ ॥ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਕਰਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਸੁਭਰਾਤਾ ॥
Kripaa Karee Ham Par Jag-maathaa; Gra[n]thh Karaa Pooran Subh-raathaa
(Jag Maathaa=) The Instrumental Cause (Initial Power) of this Universe- Akaal Purakh Ji put Their Blessing Gaze upon us and this Charitharpakhyan Granth was completed. (Shubh Raathaa=) So, it marks a good day... in other words: This (Subh=) Beautiful Granth was completed (Raathaa=) with complete love [for Vaheguru Ji]

ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਸਕਲ ਦੇਖ ਕੋ ਹਰਤਾ ॥ ਦੁਸਟ ਦੋਖਿਯਨ ਕੋ ਛੈ ਕਰਤਾ ॥੪੦੨॥
Kilbikh Sakal Dhaekh Ko Harthaa; Dhust Dhokheeyan Ko Chhai Karthaa
Reciting this Gurbani will cause the destruction of all (Kilbikh=) the worst of sins; It (Chhai =) destroys all outward enemies and the internal shortcomings, meaning: sins/bad actions.

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਸਿਧੁਜ ਜਬ ਭਏ ਦਯਾਲਾ ॥ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਾ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਤਤਕਾਲਾ ॥
Sree Asi-dhhuj Jab Bha-ae Dhyaalaa; Pooran Karaa Gra[n]thh Thath-kaalaa
When that Supreme (Asi-dhhuj=) Akaal Purakh blessed us
Then this Granth (Thathkaalaa=) was completed really quickly.

ਮਨ ਬਾਛਤ ਫਲ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥ ਦੂਖ ਨ ਤਿਸੈ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਕੋਈ ॥੪੦੩॥
Man Baachhath Phal Paavai Soee; Dhookh na Thisai Biaapath Koee
Whoever recites or listens to this Gurbani,
They receive their heart’s desire and no pain or suffering will stick onto them.

ਅੜਿਲ ॥ Arril
Arril is the name of the stanza, which tells us the importance of the Gurbani of Chaupai Sahib:

ਸੁਨੈ ਗੁੰਗ ਜੋ ਯਾਹਿ ਸੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਪਾਵਈ ॥ ਸੁਨੈ ਮੂੜ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਇ ਚਤੁਰਤਾ ਆਵਈ ॥
Sunai Gu[n]g Jo Yaah[i] Su Rasnaa Paav-aee; Sunai Moorr Chith Laa-i Chathurthaa Aav-aee
If any (Gung=) person who does not have the ability to speak - listens to this Gurbani with faith, they will receive a beautiful tongue. If any (moorr=) someone who does not have the ability to understand [ie idiot/fool] then if they listen to this Gurbani then they will attain (Chathurthaa=) the ability to speak with logic/rationale

ਦੂਖ ਦਰਦ ਭੌ ਨਿਕਟ ਨ ਤਿਨ ਨਰ ਕੇ ਰਹੈ ॥ ਹੋ ਜੋ ਯਾ ਕੀ ਏਕ ਬਾਰ ਚੌਪਈ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ॥੪੦੪॥
Dhookh Dharadh Bhau nikat na Thin nar Kae Rahai; Ho Jo Yaa Kee Aek Baar Chau-paee Ko Kahai
(Ho =) Oh Brother! That Being who (Yaa Kee=) recites this Kavi’s Writing (in other words: Akaal Purakh Ji’s revealed Gurbani ‘Chaupai Sahib’ even one time with full focus and devotion) that being will not have the pain of birth and death (reincarnation), the pain of coming out of the womb and will not have any fear of the messengers of death...

ਸੰਬਤ ਸਤ੍ਰਹ ਸਹਸ ਭਣਿਜੈ ॥ ਅਰਧ ਸਹਸ ਫੁਨਿ ਤੀਨਿ ਕਹਿਜੈ ॥
Sa[n]bath Sathrah Sahas BhaNijai; Ardhh Sahas Phun[i] Theen[i] Kahijai
In the Bikrami Calendar’s "1700" was spoken then in addition to it (Ardhh Sahas=) "50", (Phun[i]=) Again/Plus "3" was spoken.
Meaning this granth was completed on 1753 according to the Bikrami calendar...

ਭਾਦ੍ਰਵ ਸੁਦੀ ਅਸਟਮੀ ਰਵਿ ਵਾਰਾ ॥ ਤੀਰ ਸਤੁਦ੍ਰਵ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸੁਧਾਰਾ ॥੪੦੫॥
Bhaadhrav Sudhee Astamee Rav[i] Vaaraa; Theer Sath[u]-dhrav Gra[n]thh Sudhhaaraa
It was (Bhaadhrav=) the Desi month of Bhadron (August/September), (Sudhee =) waxing phase of moon, (Astamee=) 8th lunar day and (Rav[i] Vaaraa=) a Sunday;
This Granth was recited at the (Theer=) Banks of (Sath-dhrav=) Satluj River. Meaning: near the Bhakra Dam and the city of Nangal at Gurdwara Bibhaur Sahib where Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji recited this Chaupai Sahib Gurbani.

ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਖ੍ਯਾਨੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਭੂਪ ਸੰਬਾਦੇ ਚਾਰ ਸੌ ਪਾਂਚ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ਸਤੁ ਸੁਭਮ ਸਤੁ ॥੪੦੪॥੭੫੩੯॥ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ॥
Ith[i] Sree Charithr Pakhyaanae Threeyaa Charithrae Ma[n]three Bhoop Sa[n]baadhae Chaar Sau[n] Paa[n]ch Charithar Smaapath Masth[u] Subh Masth[u] - Afjoo[n]
[Here marks the completion/end of Sri Charitropakhyan, the dialogue between the King and his Minister about the tricks of people (for letting him know about the people deceiving him), 405 stories have been completed]

ਪਾਂਇ ਗਹੇ ਜਬ ਤੇ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਤਬ ਤੇ ਕੋਊ ਆਂਖ ਤਰੇ ਨਹੀ ਆਨਯੋ ॥
Paa[n]-i Gahae Jab Thae Thumrae Thab Thae Ko-oo Aa[n]kh Tharae nahee Aanyo
Oh Akaal Purakh Vaheguru Ji! Since I grasped Your (Paa-i=) Feet,
I never brought any one else under my eyes...

ਰਾਮ ਰਹੀਮ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਕੁਰਾਨ ਅਨੇਕ ਕਹੈਂ ਮਤ ਏਕ ਨ ਮਾਨਯੋ ॥
Raam Raheem Puraan Kuraan Anaek Kahai[n] Math Aek na Maanyo
(Raam=) The Religious Figure of the Hindu faith, (Raheem=) the Messenger of the Muslims, their religious scriptures: Puraan and Quran are of unique traditions but we do not follow either of them

ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਸਭੈ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਦ ਕਹੈ ਹਮ ਏਕ ਨ ਜਾਨਯੋ ॥
Si[n]mrith[i] Saasthr Baedh Sabhai Bah[u] Bhaed Kahai Ham Aek na Jaanyo
The 27 Simritee’s, 6 Shaastra’s, 4 Veda’s, They all discuss various topics and secrets behind them but we actually do not recognize them...

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਸਿਪਾਨ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਮੈ ਨ ਕਹਯੋ ਸਭ ਤੋਹਿ ਬਖਾਨਯੋ ॥੮੬੩॥
Sree Asi-paan Kripaa Thumree Kar[i] Mai na Kahyo Sabh Thoh[i] Bakhaanyo
Oh (Asi-paan=) the One who wields the Sword - the (Sree=) Supreme Akaal Purakh Vaheguru Ji! Whatever I described before, it was due to Your Blessings!-Actually, I never did anything but You are the One who have recited the Gurbani. In other words: (Mai=) I did not recite in ego but while prioritizing Your Greatness and with the intention of loving divine devotion...

ਸਗਲ ਦੁਆਰ ਕਉ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੈ ਗਹਯੋ ਤੁਹਾਰੋ ਦੁਆਰ ॥ ਬਾਂਹਿ ਗਹੇ ਕੀ ਲਾਜ ਅਸਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਦਾਸ ਤੁਹਾਰ ॥੮੬੪॥
Sagal Dhuaar Ko[u] Chhaad[i] Kai Gahyo Thuhaaro Dhuaar; Baa[n]h[i] Gahae Kee Laaj As[i] Gobi[n]dh Dhaas Thuhaar
Oh Vaheguru Ji! I have renounce the doors of all devi-devte (deities) and have held onto Your Door, Now please keep the honour of the One who holds Your Arm. Please protect Guru Gobind Rai/Your Servant (before the Amrit Sanchar where Guru Sahib’s Name changed to Guru Gobind Singh Ji) - as it is Your Nature to protect Your Devotees.
