20th Paurree: 'Bhareeai Math[i] Hathh[u] Pair[u] Than[u] Dhaeh...'
Now that the Union/Oneness has been explained, the 4 types of Giaan will be described. If anyone hears about the teaching of Thath-Thvam-Asee over and over again then is Naam Simran, Doing Seva/Karam the highest? In the context of this question, the Greatness of Naam and the great endlessness will be written in order to make the spiritual seeker look to have a spiritual experience:
-
-
Padh Arthh (word-by-word):
(Bharee-ai) = Bharnaa = To fill with something (in this case means when the body is filled with dirt/filth) = Stained
(Hathh[u]) = Hands
(Pair[u]) = Feet
(Than[u] Dhaeh) = Sareer = Body
-
Due to dirt and other causes of dirtiness, the hands, feet, body etc become dirty. OR: ‘Than’ also means an expanse (of creation) means the complete body - anything that touches the body. OR: ‘Than’ also refers to ‘Thanak’ = a little bit, if the body has even a little bit of dirt on the body.

-
Padh Arthh (word-by-word):
(PaaNee Dhhothai) = Clean with water
(Uthras[u]) = Falls off ie becomes clean
(Khaeh) = Dirt/filth-The dirt or whatever else which has dirtied the body - it can be removed with water. It becomes spotless then. This is one illustration which is given and the second is:
-
-
Padh Arthh (word-by-word):
(Mooth) = Urine/Piss
(Paleethee) = Soiled/Dirty
(Kaparr[u]) = Cloth/Clothes
-
When bacteria, urine etc gets on clothing then it becomes really impure/unclean, it does not become worthy of doing work/tasks when it is in this state.
-
-
Padh Arthh (word-by-word):
(SaabooN[u]) = Saabun = Soap
(La-aee-ai) = Take
(Dhho-i) = Wash/Clean
-
If you want to clean that clothing then rub soap in order for it to get pure again. It becomes especially clean then. This illustrative example is given and now, the connection:
-
-
Padh Arthh (word-by-word):
(Bharee-ai) = Filled/Stained (with Dirt/Filth)
(Math[i]) = Intellect
(Paapaa Kai Sa[n]g[i]) = Association of Sins
-
In this way, when the mind, intellect (Anthah-karan; different faculties of the mind) becomes dirty (i.e. with the Five Vices) and we cannot see/realize our own True Form and subsequently, we can’t answer the question: ‘Who am I?’
-
-
Padh Arthh (word-by-word):
(Oh[u] Dhhopai) = It can be cleaned
ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ (naavai Kai Ra[n]g[i]) = In the colour of Vaheguru Ji’s Name
-
If you want to clean your mind then you need the colours of Naam (i.e. have love for Vaheguru Ji through the Sathinaam) and so it becomes clean. The past sins can only be destroyed with the Greatness of Sathinaam Simran. From this, the Will of Parameshwar-Vaheguru Ji seems good and the ego goes far away. Then the person does not commit sins and the mind attains stillness through the Love of Sathinaam... Then our True Form becomes immediately visible. Next, Guru Sahib will speak about karam-kaand (rituals/actions).

-
Padh Arthh (word-by-word):
(Pu[n]nee) = Virtues/Good Thinking, Good Deeds
(Paapee) = Sins/Vices
(AakhaN[u] naah[i]) = Cannot be spoken of/described
-
In the Sant Mat (Saintly tradition), rituals are not given priority. They are seen as entanglements/limitations. Escaping these entanglements is part of our traditions. By doing good deeds, one can receive great pleasures in this world and enjoy pleasures in the afterlife. By destroying our peace, we will wander the 8.4 million life forms. These are the entanglements of being given a gold boat. By doing lots of sin, one goes to the nether-worlds (hell). Afterwhich, they have to come back into the cycle of birth and death. This is the entanglements of being given a boat of iron. What does ‘AakhaN[u] naah[i]’ refer to? Answer: ‘There is not a detailed explanation possible’. The tradition of the Saints is explained before: Meditation upon Sathinaam. Now, the following is about the good doers and the sinners👎ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਣਾ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਹੁ ॥
-
Padh Arthh (word-by-word):
(Kar[i] Kar[i]) = By doing
(KarNaa) = Actions/Deeds
(Likh[i] Lai Jaah[u]) = Become written on the Mind and causes one to be affected in the future by the repetition/habits
-
In the Saint’s Way of Thinking, rituals are not the highest thing someone can do. They see this as an entanglement/limitation. Our way of thinking liberates us from entanglements/limitations. Due to good actions, one enjoys a lot of pleasures and enjoys pleasures in the afterlife as well. Due to destroying the good karma then the being has to go into the cycle of reincarnation (8.4 million life forms) - taking birth and dying - over and over again. These are like the entanglement of the boat of gold. After doing lots of sins then the person goes to hells/nether realms. Then comes back into the cycle of birth and dying within the 8.4 million lifeforms. These are the entanglements of the boat of gold. What does ‘AakhaN naah[i]’ mean? It means ‘not an exposition/explanation of a concept’ The Saint’s Way of Thinking has been discussed earlier. Simran upon Sathinaam. Now, Guru Sahib describe the virtuous and the sinners:

ਆਪੇ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਹੁ ॥
-
Padh Arthh (word-by-word):
(Aapae Beej[i]) = They themselves plant
(Aapae Hee) = They themselves
(Khaah[u]) = Eat/Consume/Reap
-
People plant their own seeds of good deeds and sins along with their ego. Then they harvest what they planted earlier. So they receive pleasures and suffering according to that.

-
Padh Arthh (word-by-word):
(Hukamee) = Through or Bound by Vaheguru Ji’s Hukam/Command of Vaheguru Ji
(Aavah[u]) = They Come
(Jaah[u]) = They Go
-
Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji are saying: they come into this world bound by Hukam/Command of Vaheguru Ji and leave by this same Hukam. Just like a water-wheel’s are sometimes at a high point and sometimes at a low point, in that same way beings come and go in this world. This line implies that: carrying out rituals will not cause one to become liberated from this world. They will keep coming into birth and dying over and over again.
