ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
SuNi-ai Sath[u] Sa[n]thokh[u] Giaan[u]
-
Padh Arthh (Word-by-Word):
ਸੁਣਿਐ (SuNi-ai) = By Listening, Through Listening
ਸਤੁ (Sath[u]) = Sach = Truth
ਸੰਤੋਖੁ (Santhokh[u]) = Sabar/Santhustee = Contentment, Feeling fulfilled with what you already have
ਗਿਆਨੁ (Giaan[u]) = [Spiritual] Realization, Understanding, Wisdom, Knowledge
-
It is through listening that one can let go of the false/lies then be able to speak truthfully, live a contentful life, become knowledgeable, and attain Giaan: Spiritual Realization and truly, understanding the nature of things.
-
Another interpretation: By listening we can understand our True Form and be able to realize it in our practical lives. This then allows us to feel fulfilled with what we already have. Our coming and going [through the cycle of reincarnation] will end. The person who has found the Treasury within Their Own Home, will stop going outside to find happiness. They become content in that spiritual state.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਕਾ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥
SuNi-ai Att-satt[i] Kaa Isnaan[u]
-
Padh Arthh (Word-by-Word):
ਸੁਣਿਐ (SuNi-ai) = By Listening, Through Listening
ਅਠਸਠਿ (Att-satt[i]) = 68 Theerathh
ਕਾ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ (Kaa Isnaan[u]) = Bathing-Whoever listens to the Name of Vaheguru, they will receive all the rewards of bathing at all 68 Theerathh’s.
-
Another interpretation: All of the Theerathh’s are said to remove people’s sins and purify them. Learning about ‘Ishnaan’ can only be done through listening. The theerathh’s are said to be the form of all the sages and angels. Reaching such a high status can only be done through listening.
-
Third interpretation: By hearing about the greatness of the theerath’s do people visit them, without listening... they will not go.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
SuNi-ai Parr[i] Parr[i] Paavah[i] Maan[u]
-
Padh Arthh (Word-by-Word):
ਸੁਣਿਐ (SuNi-ai) = By Listening, Through Listening
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ (Parr[i] Parr[i]) = By reading, gaining knowledge by reading
ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ (Paavah[i] Maan[u]) = gaining honour, respect
-
Before people begin to read, they must listen [in order to understand how to read or otherwise, find a reason to read]. By reading does one attain respect in a king’s court[Perhaps, Kavi Ji are writing about how Raja Udhai Singh invited Kavi Ji to his court after becoming a scholar] then also receiving honour in this world and in the afterlife (the court of the angels). They can attain states higher than their own existence but only through listening.
-
Another interpretation: It is first by listening do the spiritual seekers read granths which feature discussions about our True Form of Sath[i]-Chaethan-Ana[n]dh. They first read them [listen to the teaching], they repeat them until they are engrained and made practical. This is done until they attain Spiritual Realization.*alankaar information not included**

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
SuNi-ai Laagai Sahaj[i] Dhhiaan[u]
-
Padh Arthh (Word-by-Word):
ਸੁਣਿਐ (SuNi-ai) = By Listening, Through Listening
ਲਾਗੈ (Laagai) = Receives, attains
ਸਹਜਿ (Sahaj[i]) = Peaceful, Calming, Easeful
ਧਿਆਨੁ (Dhhiaan[u]) = Concentration in meditation, Remembering Vaheguru, Focus
-
That which we listen to often, our mind intuitively focuses on it. When the mind hears it then it causes the mind to focus.
-
Another interpretation:
Sahij/Sahej means peace, the mind becomes peaceful... how? It becomes fulfilled and does not head towards temporary pleasures and vices. Instead, it listens to good traits and qualities then strives to attain them.
-
Third Interpretation: In Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Sahij also refers to a Name of Brahm-Vaheguru [One non-dual God]. By listening to the One-Brahm Vaheguru, one is able to put their concentration towards that same One-Brahm Vaheguru. There is nothing else that we see in the creation besides the One-Brahm Vaheguru. The Entire Universe is the Form of Brahm-Vaheguru.
