Veda's, Simrithee's, Puran's

[Now, Bhai Kahn Singh will feature different Hindu concepts that are compared to what is taught in Gurbani]
-
[The Hindu’s] see the Vedas as the breaths of God and eternal. You also see the Simrithee’s & Puran’s as the Support for Your Religion. (Bhai Kahn Singh’s Footnote: In Guru’s Way of Thinking, the Veda’s are known as eternal, as per
Saasath Si[n]mrith Binashigae Baedhaa
The Shastra’s, Simrithee’s, and Veda’s will cease to exist
Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji Maharaj in Raag Gourree,
Ang 237)

-
However, we see ONLY Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as our Religious Scriptures and accept the Sau Sakhi granths among others which are backed by Gurbani.
-
[Translator’s Note: It is very important for the common person to understand what all of these scriptures are. The oldest-claimed scriptures within the Hindu traditions are the Veda’s. This includes the Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, Atharva Veda. These are referred to as Shruti {meaning that which is heard, said to be Divine Authority}. Other texts are considered Smrithee {knowledge which is developed through remembering teachings, ie supplementary to the Veda’s} The Puran’s are writings which feature the stories and praises of certain Devi/Devte {gods and goddesses} and it also features methods of how to worship them. There are also large epics including the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Ramayana is the story of Ram Chandra Ji during Treta-Yug. The Mahabharata is the story of the Pandav brothers versus the Kaurav brothers during the Dwapur Yuga. Krishna Ji {Avtar of Vishnu} are a major but not main character of the story. There is one volume from the Mahabharata where one of the Pandav brothers - Arjun - is having a dialogue with Krishna about worldly life and spirituality. That text is known as the Sri-madh Bhagavad Gita. Standalone from these texts there are Dharam-Shastra’s which discuss religious rules and restrictions.
-
It is important to note that Bhai Kahn Singh refer to what Guru Sahib tell us about the Veda’s, Simrithee’s, and Puran’s in this section. Majority of the practices and day-to-day life is prescribed by the Dharam Shastra’s. Bhai Kahn Singh Ji refer to how specific Hindu scriptures do not match Gurbani and how Guru Sahib actually challenge the practices within them]

  Hindu:
The Shabads you are referring to are about spiritual wisdom. The Vedas include 3 separate sections featuring Rituals/karam-kaand, Upaashnaa/worship, and Gyaan/spiritual wisdom. Just as the Acharya (spiritual teacher) sees fit, so do they give teachings to people based on how worthy they are. In the same way, all shabads are not for everyone.
-
Sikh:
My beloved brother! Our Guru Sahib has provided these Shabads for everyone not for whoever is worthy of that specific teaching. The Sikh religion is not divided as per your standards: Rituals, worship, spiritual wisdom. Rather, we see our ‘rituals’ to be Seva (Service), acts of kindness (Upkaar), Naam Simran, Dhaan (Donation), Ishnaan (bathing and keeping cleanliness), earning an honest living (Dharam Kirath), among doing other good deeds. We don’t do acts such as flinging water in our mouth in one go, making clapping sounds with our ears and nose, and wasting precious materials in fire sacrifice among other things. [TN: If you do wish to know the structure of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji - It starts off with Japji Sahib, Rehraas Sahib, Sohila Sahib then followed by the 31 Raag sections. There are many Shabads which are compiled into the 31 Raag's. This takes up the majority of the Holy Ang's of Guru Maharaj. Following the 31 Raag's, we have Darshan of Sehiskrithee Salok's, Gatha, Phun-hae, Chau-Bolae, Salok Bhagat Kabeer Ji, Salok Bhagat Fareedh Ji. Following this, we have the Savaeeyae then Salok Vaaran Thae Vadhheek. Following the Salok Vaaran Thae Vadhheek, there is Salok Mahalla 9vaa, Mundhaavanee & Salok by Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib Ji. At the very end we find Raag Maalaa. Throughout all of these Shabads, the only structure we find is based on poetic meters, Raag, Taal measurements. Shabads are not ordered based on how the Veda's are structured]
-

Worship in the Sikh Dharam includes the following: to stop and concentrate your mind to recite Gurbani and conduct Naam Simran Abhiyaas, knowing Vaheguru as Omnipresent then being immersed in the Love of Vaheguru. We don’t ring bells in front of an idol as per your traditions.
-
Spiritual realization in our Dharam is to realize Akaal Purakh and our own True Self. Not like the dry Vedanti’s who call themselves God and become fallen from the path of devotional worship (Bhagti). Saying Aha[n]g-Brahm-Aasmee (I am God) doesn’t mean one is realized.
-
That Gurbani which is part of the teachings upon being blessed with Amrit and reciting daily as part of their constitution - there are various mixed teachings (in comparison to the separate 3 kaand’s) which the Sikhs follow and practice as per Gurmat (Guru’s Way of Thinking).
-
Hindu: Look! In Guru Granth Sahib Ji, there is a command to listen to the Vedas:
ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਿਮਿਤ੍ਰਿ ਵੇਦ ॥
SuNi-ai Saasath Simrith[i] Vaedh
By listening, one gets the knowledge of the Shastra’s, Simrithee’s, and Veda’s
(Sri Japji Sahib)
-
Sikh:
The teaching here is not to listen to the Shaastra’s and the Veda’s as our religious authoritative scriptures. The context here is to show the importance of listening. From listening, one can attain everything. Look! See what Guru Sahib teach following this:
ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਰਾ ਗੁਣਾ ਕੇ ਗਾਹ ॥
SuNi-ai Saraa GuNaa Kae Gaah
By listening, one can receive the entire Ocean of [Good] Qualities...

SuNi-ai Saekh Peer Paath[i]saah
By listening, one can become a Sheikh, Peer (Saint), &/or a King...

SuNi-ai Dhookh Paap Kaa naas[u]
By listening, one can remove their suffering and sins...
(Sri Japji Sahib)
-
Hindu:
Guru Granth Sahib Ji also say:
ਵੇਦ ਕਹਨਿ ਇਕ ਵਾਤ ॥
Vaedh Kahan[i] Ik Vaath
The Veda’s say one thing...
(Sri Japji Sahib)
-
  Sikh:
Oh Beloved Hindu brother! Why do you not read the next line:
ਸਹਸ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਕਹਨਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਅਸੁਲੂ ਇਕੁ ਧਾਤੁ ॥
Sahas Attarah Kahan[i] Kathaebaa Asuloo Ik[u] Dhhaath[u]
[and] The Kateb’s (Torah, Psalms, Gospel, Quran) say there are 18,000 worlds.... But in reality, there is only one Universe
-

Hindu: Look! Guru Sahib also say this:
ਅਹਰਣਿ ਮਤਿ ਵੇਦੁ ਹਥੀਆਰੁ ॥
AhraN[i] Math[i] Vaedh[u] Hathheeaar[u]
Let the Mathi (understanding) be the anvil and the ‘Ved’ become the tools
(Context: Guru Maharaj are comparing spiritual enlightenment with the process of minting a coin. In this line, it describes when you take the raw ore/metal and place it on an anvil then beat it into shape. Guru Sahib tells us to make our mind into the object being struck and it is kept on the anvil of the discerning faculty of our mind [buddhi] while struck with the Spiritual Knowledge-Hammer. From Sri Japji Sahib)
-
Sikh:
This pangkti/line is not referring to the Veda’s Scriptures which sings praise of the Sun, Indra, among other deities; and the one that lists the type of the high quality ingredients to turn into dust [TN: in offering to fire sacrifice]. In the context of the pangkti above, the Vedas refer to spiritual wisdom. In order to properly convince you, here is an example from the Shaasthraa’s:
'Ved does not refer to the scriptures called the Veda’s but Ved refers to the ultimate wisdom, that wisdom which after received - one attains the highest spiritual state. The person who attains this is referred to as the Knower of the 'Ved''
(Brahath Praasar Samhita, Adhiyaye 4)
-
The Mundak Upanishad (from the Athharv Veda) states that there is one Vidhyaa (Knowledge) which is the Great Spiritual Wisdom (Paraa Vidhyaa) and then the other is worldly knowledge (Aparaa Vidhyaa). In the Rig, Yajur, and Athharv Veda’s - grammar & astrology are referred to as worldly knowledge and the Great Spiritual Wisdom is that which one can attain the realization of the Indestructible Param-Aatmaa (Supreme Self/Soul).
-
In Sri Japji Sahib, ‘Vaedh[u] Hathheeaar[u]’ refers to that Great Spiritual Wisdom which is also known as Paraa Vidhyaa.
-
Hindu: See! In Sri Japji Sahib it is written:
ਗਾਵਨਿ ਪੰਡਤਿ ਪੜਨਿ ਰਖੀਸਰ ਜੁਗ ਜੁਗ ਵੇਦਾ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
Gaavan[i] Pa[n]dith[i] Parran[i] Rakheesar Jug Jug Vaedhaa naalae
The Pandits & the Highest Sages sing of You - Vaheguru while they recite the Veda’s throughout the various Yuga’s/ages.
-

Sikh: It also then says:
ਗਾਵਹਿ ਖਾਣੀ ਚਾਰੇ ॥
Gaavah[i] KhaaNee Chaarae...
The Four Sources of Creation (egg, live birth, bacterial, earth born) sing of You - Vaheguru
(Sri Japji Sahib)
-

Thudhh[u] Dhhiaa-i-nh[i] Baedh Kathaebaa SaN Kharrae
The Veda’s and Kateb’s (Abrahamic Scriptures) focus on You and stand at Your Gate
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji in Raag Goojaree, Ang 518)
-

Where the frogs, insects, animals, birds, etc. are all singing of Vaheguru - saying this, is this nourishing/encouraging what your traditions say? Our Guru Sahib teach us:
ਜੋ ਬੋਲਤ ਹੈ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਮੀਨ ਪੰਖੇਰੂ ਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪਤ ਹੈ ਨਹੀ ਹੋਰ ॥
Jo Bolath Hai Mrig Meen Pa[n]khaeroo Su Bin[u] Har[i] Jaapath Hai nahee Hor
Whatever the Deer, Fish, Birds speak - they speak of nothing other than Vaheguru Ji...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Ramdaas Ji in Raag Malaar, Ang 1265)
-

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji refer to troublemaking women as also doing the Jaap of Vaheguru, as in:
ਹੈ ਹੈ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਓਹਿ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥
Hai Hai Kar[i] Kai Oh[i] Karaen[i]
They cry and wail

Galhaa Pitan[i] Sir[u] Khohaen[i]They beat their own cheeks and lose their head [in grief]
naao[u] Lain[i] Ar[u] Karan[i] Samaa-i
They call upon the Name of Vaheguru and so will they merge into Vaheguru

naanak Thin Balihaarai Jaa-i
Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji: Sacrifice yourself to them...(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji in Salok Vaaraa[n] Thae Vadheek, Ang 1410)
-

And the Guru of the World also tell us that within the sound of the Heartbeat, the Jaap of Vaheguru is felt. See within Salok Vaaran Thae Vadhheek:
ਹਰਿਹਟ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਹਿ ... ॥
Har[i]hat Bhee Thoo[n] Thoo[n] Karah[i]
The water-wheel also says: ‘You’ ‘You’...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Amardaas Sahib Ji in Salok Vaaran Thae Vadhheek, Ang 1420)
-

Hindu: In the Granth Sahib it says the following:
ਬੇਦ ਪਾਠ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਪਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
Baedh Paatt Math[i] Paapaa Khaa-i
Reciting the Veda’s, the sinful way of thinking gets eaten...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji in Soohee Kee Vaar, Ang 791)

Sikh: Here, the following pangkti/line refers to reflecting upon spiritual wisdom then destroying the sins:
ਦੀਵਾ ਬਲੈ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
Dheevaa Balai A[n]dhaeraa Jaa-i
After the lamp is lit then darkness goes away...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji in Soohee Kee Vaar, Ang 791)
-

Those people who recite the paath without reflecting on the meaning, they do not attain any benefit. Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji had a Sikh slapped because he recited the paath incorrectly and did not think about the meanings. My beloved Hindu brother! If you are so stubborn to say that Vaedh only refers to the Veda’s scriptures then come! Let us see how idiots, people who act sinfully change after hearing the Veda’s Scriptures. Did their sinful thinking change into having a mindset of virtuous thinking or not? In order to make you doubtless, let me refer to a Shabad which does not praise the recitation of the Veda’s:
ਬੇਦ ਪਾਠ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ॥
Baedh Paatt Sa[n]saar Kee Kaar
Reciting the Veda’s is the action of the world...

Parrh[i] Parrh[i] Pa[n]dith Karah[i] Beechaar
Reading and reading, the Pandits reflect

Bin[u] Boojhae Sabh Ho-i Khuaar
Without understanding, everything is ruined...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji Maharaj in Soohee Kee Vaar, Ang 791)
-
  Hindu:
Guru Sahib also say:
ਵੇਦਾ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਤਮੁ ਸੋ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਜਿਉ ਬੇਤਾਲਿਆ ।।
Vaedhaa Mah[i] naam[u] Utham[u] So SuNah[i] naahee, Phirah[i] Jio[u] Baethaaliaa
In the Vedas - Naam is the highest - but no one listens, They wander around like spirits...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Amardaas Sahib Ji in Sri Anand Sahib, Ang 919)
-
Sikh:
This means - if there is any high thing within the Veda’s then it is the Name (meaning Naam Maathr), the ignorant people do not reflect deeply upon the meanings and engage in fire sacrifices and other useless things then wander like Baethaal (crazy). Guru Sahib teach:
Har[i] Kae naam Heen Baethaal
Without the Name of Vaheguru, one is like a ghoul...(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji in Raag Saarang, Ang 1222)
-
In this pangkti/line, Guru Sahib aren’t referring to the Veda’s as the highest/supreme but describing the greatness of the Name of Vaheguru. (Sampardaaee Giani’s produce the meaning of this line by doing Anvai [moving sections of the line]: naam[u] Utham[u] So SuNah[i] naahee... Vaedhaa Mah[i] Baethaaliaa Ji[ou] Phirah[i] - The Name is the Highest but they don't listen, due to the Veda's the wander around like spirits...)
-
  Hindu:
Guru Sahib also say:
ਚਾਰਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਹਿ ਨਾ ਤੂ ਮਾਨਹਿ ॥
Chaar[i] Pukaarah[i] naa Thoo Maanah[i]
The four Veda’s declare it but you don’t listen...

Khat[u] Bhee Aekaa Baath Vakhaanah[i]
The Six Darshana’s say the same thing...

Dhas Astee Mil[i] Aeko Kahiaa
The 18 Puran’s get together when they speak about the One...

Thaa Bhee Jogee Bhaedh[u] na Lahiaa
Even still, Yogi, you still don’t understand the mystery...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji in Raag Raamkalee, Ang 886)
-
  Sikh:
Guru Sahib are speaking to a yogi - who kept faith in the Veda’s and Shaasthra’s. Guru Sahib are saying: Oh Yogi! After reading the Veda’s and Shaasthraa’s, you were still not able to find out the mystery behind Param-Aatmaa. The water was stirred for no reason! And Hindu Brother! Guru Sahib tell the Yogi: Oh Yogi! Look at the teachings of the Quran and the Bible (Injeel) but did you not understand their secrets?
In the same way Guru Maharaj taught the Yogi, Guru Maharaj also spoke to Muslims:
ਦੋਜਕਿ ਪਉਦਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਹੈ ਜਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਰਸੂਲਿ ॥
Dhojak[i] Poudhaa Kio[u] Rahai, Jaa Chith[i] na Ho-i Rasool[i]
How can he not go to hell, when he doesn’t focus on his prophet?(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji in Gourree Kee Vaar,
Ang 319)
-

Ho-i Muslim[u] Dheen MuhaaNai MaraN JeevaN Kaa Bharam[u] Chukaavai
Becoming a Muslim, a disciple of Muhammad - removing the delusion of life and death...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji in Maajh Kee Vaar,
Ang 141)
-

Mihar Maseeth[i] Sidhak[u] Musalaa Hak[u] Halaal[u] KuraaN[u]
Let Mercy be your mosque, Steadfastness be your prayer mat, honest living be your Quran
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji in Maajh Kee Vaar, 140)
-

Sach[u] Kamaavai Soee Kaajee; Jo Dhil Sodhhai Soee Haajee
Those who act truthfully, they are a Qazi...Whoever cleans their hearts, they are a Hajji (person who travels to Mecca for pilgrimage)

So Mulaa Malouoon nivarai, So Dharvaes[u] Jis[u] Siphath[i] Dhharaa
That person is a Mulla, who has removed evil/sins within themselves...
That person is a Darvesh who keeps the Praise of Vaheguru in Their Heart...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Raag Maaroo, Ang 1084)
-

Based on these teachings, would you interpret this as Guru Sahib telling Sikhs to obey Prophet Muhammad? In reality, you are ignorant to the method and aims of Guru Sahib in their teachings.
Hindu: In Guru Granth Sahib, it’s written:
ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਕਹੋ ਮਤਿ ਝੂਠੇ ਝੂਠਾ ਜੋ ਨਾ ਬਿਚਾਰੈ ॥
Vaedh Puraan Kaho Math[i] Jhoottae Jhoottaa Jo naa Bichaarai
Don’t call the Veda’s or Puran’s false, false is someone who doesn’t reflect on them

  Sikh: The correct paath:
ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਕਹਹੁ ਮਤ ਝੂਠੇ .....॥
Baedh Kathaeb Kahah[u] Math Jhoottae
Do not call the Veda’s or Katheb’s (Abrahamic texts) false...
(Dhan Bhagat Kabeer Ji in Raag Prabhaathee, Ang 1350)

Understanding the meaning: While in Kanshi, Hindus and Muslims came to Bhagat Kabeer Ji and used to gossip and insult each other. They used to also swear at the other religion’s religious scriptures. Bhagat Kabeer Ji gave the ultimate teaching in order to keep peace between them - don’t speak angrily or call the other religion’s texts false without even reflecting upon them. It leads to blind divisiveness. Understand the reality and keep the peace then be able to understand the hidden reality within the religious texts. You applied this Shabad as Bhagat Kabeer Ji’s approval of the Veda’s (without understanding the context behind it). We find it suitable to read Bhagat Kabeer Ji’s view towards the Quran and Veda’s as per:
ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਇਫਤਰਾ ਭਾਈ ਦਿਲ ਕਾ ਫਿਕਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
Baedh Kathaeb Iphtharaa Bhaaee, Dhil Kaa Phikar[u] na Jaa-i
Oh brother, the Veda’s and Kateb’s are superficial,They do not deal with concerns of the heart...
(Bhagat Kabeer Ji in Raag Thila[n]g, Ang 727)
-

My respected Hindu Friend! Our Guru Sahib was persistent in spreading the truth and beloved to all. They never insulted nor praised anyone. The reality that they saw, they then spoke of. They saw the Veda’s, Quran, among other religious texts with one lens. They never saw Sa[n]skrit as the language of the angels nor saw Arabic or Farsi as the language of the Malaechh (Foreigners). As we understand from Guru Maharaj’s Bani.
Alah A-lakh Apaar

(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji in Raag Raamkalee, Ang 896)
-

Hindu: Let go of what has been mentioned before, look! Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s ancestors recited the Veda’s and so, referred to as Vaedhee/Baedhee/Bedi. As per Bachithar Naatak:
ਜਿਨੈ ਬੇਦ ਪਠਿਓ ਸੁ ਬੇਦੀ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
Jinai Baedh Patti-O Su Baedhee Kahaa-ae
Those who recite the Veda’s are known as Bedi’s

Thinai Dhharam Kae Karam neekae Chalaa-ae
They do Dharmic rituals which are on the good path
(4th Adhhiyaye)
-

How can you run from the Veda’s now?
-
Sikh: Beloved Brother! We did not say that the person who reads the Veda’s is a sinner or that it is [inherently] bad but for Sikhs, Veda’s isn’t part of our own religious scriptures. It is just like the ancestors of Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad used to lovingly read the Torah and Psalms as well as respected them as God’s commands. However, the religious scriptures of the Christians and Muslims are Injeel/Gospel (Bible) and the Quran.
-
Likewise, even if Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji’s ancestors recited the Veda’s and conducted their life according to the Veda’s then it doesn’t change the fact that Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji are the religious scripture for the Sikh Dharam and the Giver of Liberation. There is no religious scripture such as the Veda’s in comparison.
