Hindu-Sikh Q&A begins...
[Translator Note: The format of this book is a back-and-forth Question and Answer between a Hindu and a Sikh. This long conversation covers various topics and common doubts that people bring up in regards to Sikhi. Please know that we have tried to transliterate lines written in poetry as best as possible but any words that are referred to in commentary will be written using a common spelling. There will be lots of mistakes in writing, so please DM us on Instagram(@SikhTranslations) if anything needs to be changed]

Hindu: I hear a lot of Sikhs say that Sikhs are not Hindus but in my understanding, this is ignorance because:
1) Sikhs came out of Hindu’s
2) Their diets/eating style are similar with Hindu’s
3) Sikhs have married Hindu’s and have Hindu relatives
4) Sikhs live in Hindustan, so how can they not be Hindu
5) If you avert calling yourself Hindu because of the Farsi definition then they should look at the Sanskrit definition which means: the one who conquers the cruel and the brave ones [TN: usually written by Persian poets as an insult; they called people ‘Hindus’ as a synonym for thief or dark skinned](look in Ram Kosh, Meru Tantra Prakash, and Kalika Puran)
6) Hindu refers to Indus or Sindhu river
-
Sikh: We say ‘We are not Hindu’ because Sikhs are seen as separate due to their own religious and historical texts. It was necessary to write this book because our identity is becoming completely erased, and we cannot live properly [according to Guru Sahib’s Sikhi] unless it is widely known that we are distinct. Truly, we don’t see this statement as man-made. Rather, this statement aligns with Guru Maharaj’s Commands, as per:
ਨਾ ਹਮ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਨ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ॥
Naa Ham Hi[n]dhoo na Musal-maan
I am not a Hindu nor a Muslim
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji in Raag Bhairou, Ang 1136)
-
ਹੋਰੁ ਫਕੜੁ੍ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੈ
Hor[u] Phakarr[u] Hi[n]dhoo Musal-maaNai
Whether they are in Hindu or Muslim, they just speak uselessly
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji in Raamkalee Kee Vaar, Ang 952)
[TN: There is a specific context Guru Maharaj are referring to here, please see full shabad for proper understanding. Any place where you will see ‘Ang’ written is an easy indicator that the line is from Gurbani. We will give some contextual information for Sikh historical texts as well. Bhai Gurdaas Ji are the Nephew of Guru Amardaas Ji. They became a Parchaarak and scribed Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in the early form before Guruship. Bhai Gurdaas Ji lived until Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. They have writings which are divided based on the style of poetry used: Vaar/Ballad’s, Kabith, and Savaiye. While Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji were blessing the kings in Gwalior Fort, they made Bhai Gurdaas Ji - the first Jathedar of Akaal Takht]

Bhai Mani Singh Ji write the following in their ‘Gyaan Rathnaavalee'
[TN: Bhai Mani Singh Ji are the same who learnt Santhiya of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji from Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. They are the same one who had every joint of their body cut and became Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh Ji. At age 13, Bhai Mani Singh Ji had Darshan of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji. Bhai Mani Singh’s children include many Shaheed Singhs like Bhai Bachithar Singh, Bhai Udhay Singh. Bhai Mani Singh Ji served as the Granthi Singh at Sri Darbar Sahib. They also wrote a detailed commentary of Bhai Gurdaas Ji’s Vaaran which is called Gyaan Rathnaavalee]:

It is not just Amritdhari Singhs who are distinct from Hindus. There are even Sakhi’s with Sehajdhari Sikhs that show we have renounced traditions of other faiths and have love with Gurmat. On this topic, see Bhai Gurdaas Ji’s 11th Vaar which has been commented/expanded upon by Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh in Giaan Rathnavali:
Bhai Dhesi and Bhai Jodhh were of a Sangar Brahman background. They came to Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s Sanctuary and did an Ardaas: ‘Oh True King! The other Pandits, don’t let us sit and eat with them. Because you are the Guru of the World...Renouncing the Brahma's writings known as the the Vedas, Sikhs sing the simply understood Gurbani. Renouncing the practices of Janam Ashtami, Shiv-rathree, Ekadashi, Gayathree, Trisandhyaa, Death rites (Pind Pathal); Sikhs do an Ardaas to Vaheguru and offer Karraah Prashaadh upon someone’s death. We have come to Your Sanctuary, You have saved us. We are now away from the arrogance of the Brahmins and have attained Guru Maharaj’s Blessing of Naam

With the same teaching from the previous Sakhi, there is another Sakhi from Bhagat Rathnaavali: The Sikhs did an Ardaas: ‘Oh True King! The Pandits in Kashmir - they don’t let us read Gurbani. They say that Sanskrit is the language of the gods and the common language is man-made. The people say we have let go of the [ritualistic] actions prescribed by the Vedas. They don’t want anything to do with us.’ Then Maadhoo Sodhi was given a command: ‘Go teach the Kashmiri’s the way of Guru’s Sikhi'.
