Concluding Points
Hindu: You might be different from us based on religious principles and traditions but our strategies/politics make us one because Sikhs do not have different laws from Hindu laws. Sikhs make their decisions based on Hindu law and Sikhs have to live according to Hindu law. This is why they are not separate from Hindu’s.
-
Sikh: Beloved Hindu Ji! Your Hindu law (the Dharam Shaastra’s which you see as law) is not used anywhere today. If it was actively practiced then we would see people with their noses, ears, hands, &/or feet cut off. And it would be evident that people have had their faces, ears, etc. melted from hot oil. The law always changes based on the times and traditions of the time. When a ruler/political leader changes then the law changes too. In the same way, your Hindu law is different today then it was before. And the Sikhs make decisions based on previous Sikh historical traditions that is why Sikhs are subject to Customary Law. You probably know too that Hindu’s, Christian’s, Muslims, among other traditions did not develop their laws immediately after the creation of their faiths. Rather, even in these traditions, their traditions did not have their main religious scriptures written at the same time as their religious figures. The laws were established based on the specific time’s necessity. Just as specific laws were necessary, so did scholars/intellectual people develop them based on the politics of the time. Whoever was in power at the time, so did they get it attributed to them. [TN: If the law was heavily theological then it became attributed to that religion]. If the law was developed by Hindu’s then it became known as Hindu law. In the same way, may Vaheguru Ji be merciful so that Sikh Law be prepared soon. Just like Maalwinder Bahadhar Maharaja Ripudaman Singh Sahib (Nabha-Pathi) had developed the Anand Marriage Act. Gurbani and the Rehitnama exist as core principles [that are effectively,] short-form rules that formed as early Sikhs’ law. Now, they just need to be expanded upon in order to make law.
-
Before you had this delusion, Sir Lepel Griffin encouraged ‘Sikh law’ to be developed, and also, raise the point that it is not appropriate for Sikhs to follow ‘Hindu Law’:The Sikhs had abandoned the Hindu faith, and with it the system of law which is the basis of that faith and which was inseparable from it. For a hundred and fifty years they had been governed, as far as Chiefships were concerned, by another code altogether, and it was as reasonable for them to refer to Manu and the Shastras as the source of legal authority, as it would have been for Muhammadans, who had embraced Sikhism to appeal to the Shara.(The Rajas of the Punjab, page 338; originally written in English, copied word-for-word)
-
Hindu: After all of our conversations, I do accept that you are not Hindu but with foresight, it is not beneficial for Sikhs to separate themselves from Hindu’s. Firstly, it creates division between the communities. Secondly, Sikhs are small in number. If the Sikhs separates from Hindus (who are quite wealthy/powerful) then it would result in much loss. The intellectuals say that where if you lack in wealth then you should try to increase it.
-
Sikh: Beloved respected Hindu brother! Your point has not been thought through with much depth and have not seen the ancient historical examples where other communities developed from. They separated and became quite strong. You do not compare those communities with the Sikh community.
-
My beloved Ji! No community on this earth can flourish without independence. If a distinct community remains a branch of another community then they head towards slavery and instead of firm promises, they face losses (When Christians did not separate from Jewish people then they had to suffer. There was a time when Christianity dwindled and only existed in name. At the end, Christians had to think carefully and separate from the Jewish people. They had to separate and its why instead of Saturday (Shabbat of the Jewish), the Christians believe the Lord’s Day is on Sunday. Muslims had to separate from the previous religions {that preceded Prophet Muhammad}. They would not receive success as a religious community without this.
-
The highest teaching that Guru Sahib taught us was that of unity and mutual understanding. This is something we can never forget. And love all communities like neighbours and we see their successes & losses as our own. However, due to religious and societal rules, we are not the same. We have seen from experience that remaining merged into Hindu communities have resulted in big losses for Sikhs and have continued to become problematic in these ways:
-
A) Many Sikhs and Sikh families have become Monay (haircut). Many people who became Sikh during Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s time, they have returned to their family’s old ways.
-
B) Many people have married into Monay (haircut) families and have forsaken their Holy religion. And in order to distract/please other Sikhs, they say that Sikhi should be practiced within the mind and not restricted to Kes, Kachhera, and other symbols as part of being blessed with Amrit. You know that those who say this don’t have Sikhi within their minds either and only try to entrap others to act like them or appease the Sikhs who question their lifestyle.
-
C) A lot of the wealth of Sikhs - uselessly - gets donated to Brahmin’s. From which the Sikh community does not benefit from. Look! At the last Kumbh Mela (at Ganga River), 100,000 Sikhs went on pilgrimage. Each person probably spent about 10 Rupees [a lot during the time this was written, roughly about minimum of modern 15,000+ INR, 119.43 - 119.76 GBP, 221.72 - 223.03 CAD, 162.33 USD {as of April 17th 2026}] then if we multiply 10 x 100,000 Sikh attendees then it makes about 100,000 rupees [₹3 Crore – ₹5 Crore today]. Our naive community lost this money for no reason. If this money were to be used to develop a college for Sikh girls then it would have been of great benefit. And imagine if an orphanage could have been opened... that would have been really great.- In this way the Sikh community wastes 100,000s upon someone’s birth or death. If this amount was used for Sikh initiatives then think how much social progress would occur.
-
D) Hindu’s have actively tried to remove attempts to remove signs/symbols of Sikhi and to assimilate Sikhs into Hindus. See the following illustration: Whenever some ignorant Sikh, carries out Shraadh (ancestor worship] or goes to Gayaa and other pilgrimages then through the Brahmin’s manipulation then they are made to say farewell to the kachhera and karraa. This means that the Sikh can’t wear their own symbols while following Hindu traditions. But if the Sikh does not have belief in Hindu traditions then the Hindu’s cannot remove these religious symbols while they are in their own homes.
-
And what you said that the Sikh community separating from Hindu’s is a reason for division/enmity, that is also not right to say because Sikhs do not have any enmity against anyone. They have conviction towards the following bachans from Guru Sahib which embody the love for all beings in this world:
1)
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਮੀਤੁ ਹਮ ਆਪਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹਮ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੇ ਸਾਜਨ ॥
Sabh Ko Meeth[u] Ham Aapan Keenaa Ham Sabhnaa Kae Saajan

See the entire world as your beloved friend...
(Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji in Sri Sukhmani Sahib, Ang 266)
-
Beloved brother! The following saying can be proven: “It takes two hands to clap”. If someone needlessly makes enmity with Sikhs then it will be violence against peace. We live peacefully and you are making enmity with living peacefully. See the following illustration: When Hindu’s had Sikhs handed over to the Mughal government and attained a bounty for the murdered Sikh head with uncut hair, Sikhs did not keep enmity. Even at that time, Sikhs had freed their wives and daughters as part of the efforts to remove injustice and cruelty with their own blood by fulfilling this Bachan from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji:
ਫਰੀਦਾ ਬੁਰੇ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਸਾ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਹਢਾਇ ॥
Phareedhaa Burae Dhaa Bhalaa Kar[i], Gusaa Man[i] na Hadtaa-i
Bhagat Ji: seek the benefit of the people who act bad, don’t let anger gather in the mind...
ਦੇਹੀ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਪਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
Dhaehee Rog[u] na Lag-aee Pal-ai Sabh[u] Kichh[u] Paa-i
Then you won’t have any physical disease and have everything with you...
(Dhan Bhagat Kabeer Ji in Their Salok, Ang 1381)
-
And we also know this well that Hindu’s don’t have any enmity with us but instead, have love. They know of the benevolent acts performed by our Guru’s. We want the best for them too. The cause of enmity is always those people who have the ghost of selfishness possessing them. They believe that if they lose the Sikh community that they will lose a huge source of profit. These are the same people who stir up chaos, create trouble and enmity. If Vaheguru gives them the right way of thinking then they would earn an honest living and see the wealth of others as forbidden then all of these arguments would end.
-
These selfish people publish books and articles in newspapers in order to prove that Sikhs are Hindu. The wise people should think that if a Sikh does not consider themselves a Hindu then what problem does that create? Yes, if Sikhs were to say to Hindu’s that you are not a Hindu then for sure, it will become a source for fighting. If someone says that Hindu’s have sympathy/compassion for Sikhs and are hurt by seeing Sikhs separating from them then this is absolutely false as well. This is because it is quite evident that Sikhs are being actively assimilated by Hindu’s. Sometimes, Hindus give examples of a time when a Sikh is going to leave their faith and a Hindu has stopped them from doing so. We can find 1,000s of examples where it’s actually the Hindu encouraging a Sikh to leave their faith and practice Hindu traditions where Hindu’s influence Sikhs to cut their hair, given tobacco, some people have vowed on removing Kirpaan’s and Kachhera’s. In many Guru’s temples, the Sikh ways are being removed and Hindu traditions such as the ringing of bells - are being placed and the naive Sikhs are falling for these illusions. Some Gurdwara’s have been placed under the land ownership of Hindu’s [eg cause of Saka Nankana Sahib] where they egotistically run the institution as it pleases them. How many other circumstances should I narrate to you where these people have taken the great spectacles of Sikhi and turned them upside down? In such conditions, can a wise person say that Hindu’s feel sympathy and that is why they are trying to prove them to be Hindus?
-
If Sikhs didn’t have their own regiment in the army [referring to British Indian army] and we didn’t have the Merciful Vaheguru’s Illumination of current knowledge revealed [in the late 1800s and 1900s, there was a growth in Sikh literature and growth in practicing Sikhi] then the Sikh religion would only be on paper. However, we thank Akaal Purakh Vaheguru that we have been blessed with the understanding we have and we have been given the opportunity to reform our worldly and religious future. And we should have full faith in our Guru Sahib’s teachings and should remain the distinct Sikh community and develop our existence in this world.
-
And beloved Hindu brother! If you are convicted that the Sikhs should refer to themselves as Hindu as per your desire then even still, this country will benefit from this because where there are hundreds of sects which call themselves Hindu, if one other group is added to that list then what will the Hindu actually benefit?- Our country will only be successful when every person who follows their own traditions according to how they are supposed to yet still see their countrymen as their own akin to the Japanese [before WW2]. [The Japanese] see the suffering of another person [despite different faiths/religionns] as the country’s suffering and they don’t make problems based on religion. We should spread the teachings of our religion - stepping in the Holy Footprints of Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji. In a way which mutual respect occurs and jealousy/duality does not increase.- My beloved brothers who are on the Path of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji! I have full faith that you will see yourself as part of the Sikh community as per the above discussions. Without a doubt, you will acknowledge that ‘We are not Hindu’ and you will keep love with your fellow countrymen and know all of the residents of [South Asia] as your own. [Translator’s Note: Please understand this book was written at a time where there were very few Sikhs in other places in the world. Likewise, very few South Asians around the world too. This was also before the creation of modern political countries and the partition of South Asia. These sentiments have changed due to the manner of how Sikhs have suffered in the 20th century till now]
